New OpenVMS Release and Expanded Rdb Migration Options

In the previous issue of Mimer SQL Insights, we discussed legacy database modernisation on OpenVMS, with a particular focus on moving from Oracle Rdb to Mimer SQL while staying on a proven and trusted platform.

That topic remains highly relevant. As OpenVMS evolves, one fact stands out more clearly than ever: Mimer SQL is the only production-ready relational database available on OpenVMS for x86_64. For organisations planning their next steps on OpenVMS—whether on IA-64 or x86_64—this provides a stable, supported, and future-proof database foundation.

New Mimer SQL release for OpenVMS

We are pleased to announce the release of Mimer SQL version 11.0.9F for OpenVMS, available for both IA-64 and x86_64. This release continues our commitment to long-term stability, performance, and platform continuity for OpenVMS users.

Expanded Rdb Migration Toolkit – now with direct data migration

Alongside the database release, we have also published a new version of the Mimer SQL Rdb Migration Toolkit on GitHub: https://github.com/mimersql/mimersql-rdb-migration

This update introduces an important new capability: direct data migration from Oracle Rdb into Mimer SQL.

Previously, data migration relied on exporting data from Rdb using RMU, translating the output, and then importing it into Mimer SQL. While still supported, the toolkit now includes an alternative approach: once the schema has been translated and created in Mimer SQL, a Java-based migration program can copy the data directly from Oracle Rdb into Mimer SQL. This can significantly simplify the migration process and reduce intermediate steps.

Also applicable to Oracle Classic

The same Java-based migration program can also be used with other database management systems, such as Oracle Classic, providing a migration path from that platform into Mimer SQL as well. This makes the toolkit useful beyond OpenVMS-only environments and supports a wider range of legacy modernisation scenarios.

New migration cookbook article

To make it even easier to get started, we have published a new article on the Mimer SQL Developer site: a step-by-step cookbook for migrating the Oracle Rdb sample database MF_PERSONNEL into Mimer SQL.

You can find the article here: https://developer.mimer.com/rdb-migration-cookbook/

The cookbook is intended as a practical, hands-on companion to the more comprehensive and definitive guide, “Mimer SQL Migration Guide from Oracle”, which covers the full migration process, concepts, and considerations in depth. Used together, they provide both a solid theoretical foundation and a concrete, worked example.

The migration guide is available here: https://docs.mimer.com/MimerWhitePapers/rdb_to_mimer_migration.pdf
